Glaucoma Seton Implants at Our New York City and Long Island Area Center

A tiny plate with a tube attached, a glaucoma Seton implant is used to relieve pressure in the eye. In addition to SLT surgery, glaucoma implants are a treatment option for patients at our New York City and Long Island area center. Glaucoma specialist Dr. Lawrence F. Jindra can help his patients understand their options and make the decision that is right for them.

How Glaucoma Seton Implants Work

Glaucoma Seton implants create a new path through which aqueous fluid can drain away from the eye and be reabsorbed into the circulation. This improved drainage system decreases intraocular pressure, preventing further damage from glaucoma. The tiny plate has a surface area between 250 and 425 sq. mm. and is attached to a thin, flexible drainage tube. During glaucoma implant surgery at our Long Island and New York City area center, Dr. Jindra carefully positions the plate according to the patient's individual needs. Unlike the implants used during cataracts surgery, however, the glaucoma implants are not intended to restore or improve vision. The purpose of the glaucoma implants is to relieve intraocular pressure and preserve vision from further impairment.

Candidates for Glaucoma Seton Implants

Glaucoma Seton implants may be recommended for adults with complicated glaucoma, such as:

  • Previous glaucoma surgery that failed to reduce the pressure in the eye
  • Previous surgery or injury to the eye coverings (conjunctiva or sclera)
  • Absence of all or part of the lens of the eye
  • Congenital glaucoma for which standard glaucoma surgery has failed
  • Certain forms of glaucoma that respond poorly to glaucoma laser surgery

Individuals interested in learning more about glaucoma implants can visit our Long Island practice. Serving all of New York City, Dr. Jindra can determine if patients are candidates for this effective treatment technique.
